MRSA could be wiped out with... OREGANO OIL, say British scientist

By Daily Mail Reporter
24th November 2008

The MRSA super-bug could be wiped out using natural oil from oregano, scientists revealed today. Researchers have discovered that the herb, commonly used in cooking, could eradicate the deadly infection from hospital wards.

Tiny quantities of carvacrol, a naturally occurring compound in oregano, were found to be a more effective antimicrobial agent than 18 pharmaceutical drugs, investigators found. University of the West of England researchers, working with partners in India, said carvacrol, which contains potent anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, has a range of medicinal uses.

It can sterilize septic water, kill giardia, treat fungal infections such as candida and rivals pharmaceutical antibiotics such as streptomycin and penicillin in its ability to eliminate microbes. Preliminary research into the oil found that tiny doses are capable of wiping out fungi and bacteria, including MRSA.

Researchers found that the oil still works at boiling temperature, meaning it could be used for disinfecting hospital sheets. Its vapor is equally effective and could be turned into an antibacterial spray.

Mr Heron, whose firm Biolaya led the research in northern India, said: ‘Himalayan oregano oil kills MRSA at dilution’s of less than one to 1,000 and the antimicrobial properties, unlike most conventional anti-bacterial agents, are not affected by heat treatment.

‘Once we have completed our research and published a paper, we aim to find additional partners to work together with to manufacture hand soaps, multi-purpose anti-bacterial wipes and other products for use in hospitals as a preventative against MRSA.

‘In this way we to hope to create a direct link between oregano collectors in the Himalayan foothills and users of the oil in a partnership that benefits everyone involved. ‘Not only will this provide income to herb collectors, it will reduce pressure on endangered medicinal herbs and provide an effective natural treatment against MRSA in hospitals.’

Last week Bioloaya, which encourage sustainable methods of farming in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, was presented with the UN-funded Seed Award 2008 for entrepreneurship in sustainable development.

The Seed Initiative will work with Biolaya to publish its research in a scientific journal and find partners to develop oregano oil-based soaps and sprays.

After initial tests by the leading SGS laboratory in Delhi showed crop killed MRSA more effectively than all 18 antibiotics it was compared against, Biolaya made links with the microbiology department at the University of the West of England in Bristo.

Researchers there confirmed the high anti-microbial potency.

The average NHS hospital deals with 26 cases of MRSA each year, with more than 4,000 cases reported in Britain in 2007.

Mr Heron revealed he became interested in combating MRSA after his father was taken into hospital. He said: ‘I was really shocked at the amount of hand-washing, disposable aprons and gloves the nurses were having to use to try to prevent infection. Anybody who has been into an NHS hospital in the last few years will be aware to some extent of the problem. ‘I started looking on the internet and found out there was some research that suggested oregano oil could be used to combat MRSA but no one had conducted the proper studies. ‘I was already working in India promoting organic farming and sustainable land management practices that benefit people and the environment. We were already looking at sustainable ways to harvest oregano. ‘I was stunned to find out how powerful oregano could be in the fight against MRSA.’

The University of the West of England has integrated research into oregano oil as part of a pilot MSc project.
It had previously been discovered that oregano had the ability to kill off bacteria, but researchers have now proved the Himalayan variety could be slightly more effective than the Mediterranean type used more commonly in Europe. The variety is known as ‘bekaar ghaas,’ meaning useless grass in Hindi as even their cows, goats and sheep refuse to eat the herb.

It is thought the high altitude gives the oregano higher than normal percentage of carvacrol, ranging from 78per cent in July to 71per cent.

Oregano Oil And Antibiotics

The premise I am making is based on the argument that man cannot create anything superior to what already exists in nature and the specific niche I want to address is medicine but before I get there I want to momentarily dwell on this concept of man's drive to create. Considering that man is made in the image of God, it stands to reason that each of us share bits and pieces of His character and behavior. Since we are creatures, we of course have limitations in regards to our abilities whereas God has no creative limitations or hinderances in acting out His will.

Synthetic vs. Natural
With that in mind, it have been revealed to us through the ancients that when God gave man a place on the earth, He also provided us with an abundance of plants and herbs numbering in the thousands that benefit our well being. Considering, His perfect provision for us, does it stand to reason that we really need synthetic alternatives for our bodily benefits? I don't think so and I would challenge anyone to prove to me that synthetic products of any kind can command a superior position over natural products.

Antibiotics Defined
I would go so far as to say that synthetic products are not only inferior to natural products but that they do more harm than good for mankind and the further these synthetics depart from the natural order of life, the more dangerous and harmful are their effects on the human body. Pharmaceuticals are a prime example and more specifically, we can address antibiotics which have been falsely touted as one of the great discoveries of the 20th century. The very term 'antibiotic' should solicit concern in that the term is defined as 'anti-life' or 'against life'! So, what do antibiotics do exactly? Simply explained, they indiscriminately kill bacteria both good and bad and unfortunately many forms of bacteria are necessary for good health so when you're ingesting antibiotics you are indeed destroying bad bacteria but you are also destroying the micro flora that is crucial to bodily health but not only are you compromising your immediate health, you are also paving the way for the pathogens which have intelligence to strengthen their abilities to fight against the synthetic antibiotics which don't have intelligence. Thus we are now seeing the evolution of super bugs which are a major and ever present danger in every hospital across America and around the world.

Wonders Of Natural Oils
There is ample research available (which I will address in future articles) to prove the superiority of plants and herbs ability to effectively destroy bad bacteria without any detrimental side effects. More specifically, we can look at oil of oregano as one of the most effective naturally occurring products available that acts as an antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, anti-fungal, antimicrobial and an antioxidant. Oregano oil is packed with minerals and vitamins and outperforms any and every antibiotic on the market by targeting a myriad of bad pathogens while at the same time strengthening the immune system and girding it up so that it is better able to combat infectious invasions of destructive bacteria.

Natural Empowerment
Additionally, oregano oil is significantly less money than a round of antibiotics and low and behold, it is are available without a doctor's prescription! One of the key components to gaining bodily vitality, clear thinking and new found energy is to take responsibility for your own well being by disciplining yourself not to rely on government mandated healthcare. Practice thinking outside the box and stay connected with others of like mind to keep your skills of discernment sharp, clear and focused and most important of all, seek to uncover nature's secrets!

Mindless Disclosure
I found the following statement on another website and liked it so much I thought I would share it with you:
"These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and this product is not intended to diagnose, cure, prevent or treat any diseases."
The above is a government ordered statement and is not based in either reality or sanity, just like our government.

A Potential Problem Of Epic Proportions

Our modern world is being threatened by an invisible enemy which will conquer using the art of deception. As bizarre as it seems, this enemy is promoted as our friend, healer and helper yet the havoc being caused by this enemy may be beyond our comprehension. The name of this enemy reveals its true nature and when broken down the name reveals the words, 'against life'. So, what is the name this enemy goes by? 'Antibiotics' is the name and it takes many forms, all of which are contributing to a world wide proliferation of destructive super bugs that have been created by the very drugs that were created to destroy the diseases they targeted.

How Bad Is It?
More than 50 million pounds of these antibiotics are produced annually in the United States. Some 40 percent of that total is given to animals, mostly to promote growth rather than treat disease. Antibiotic use is also rampant in agriculture--for example, the drugs are sprayed onto fruit trees to control bacterial infections. Another little-recognized application is in antibacterial household cleaning products, soaps, toothpaste, and even plastic toys and cutting boards, which incorporate bacteria-killing substances too potent to be used in the body. The upshot of this massive exposure is the increasingly familiar predicament the world now faces: disease-causing super bugs that resist the drugs that once thwarted them. We are experiencing an alarming resurgence of common but no longer curable infections from super bugs that developed their resistance in our antibiotic-filled bodies, in animals, in fields, even on our antibacterial-soaked kitchen counters.

Sterilized Creation
Another sobering consideration is the fact that one billion tons of antibiotic laced animal waste is being generated yearly with these antibiotics going into the environment thus creating even more resistant stains of bacteria. Add to this number, human ingested antibiotics which continue to do their destructive work even after they leave our bodies passing into our water supplies as well as back into the soil. Additionally, millions of farm acres world wide have been sterilized and are continuing to be sterilized by industrial farming practices using synthetic fertilizers. The consequences are such that beneficial flora within the human and earthly terrain are no longer flourishing, opening yet one more facet through which disease and destruction will prey upon the human race and our environment.

Wrong Belief System
So, how is it that life on this planet has come to such predicament as this? When considering the big picture, we can blame our situation on the philosophical foundation of modernity. Modernity grew out of the age of enlightenment which was nurtured in the soils of Western civilization. But if this so, what was wrong with Western civilization that could cultivate such disastrous consequences? I believe the answer lies within the world of religious belief. Religion takes various forms around the world and within each culture both ancient and modern, we find religious beliefs permeating every aspect of culture and governing every facet of how a community, tribe or nation functions. I believe that the Eastern world and thus Eastern philosophy and religion (specifically Eastern Orthodoxy) which were the preserved by Eastern peoples, were in turn, corrupted by Western peoples, thus opening the way for the destructive aspects of modernity which we are experiencing today.

Conflictive Views
Rather than digging deeper on this thought, I would like to leave it and jump ahead to the conflict we moderns are experiencing between what I will define as synthetic materialism and natural materialism. Having supposedly evolved to a higher form of thought, we moderns have embraced 'man' himself, as being the creator, savior and ruler of the creation. Religion for the most part has been relegated to the realms of the spiritual, immaterial world having no influence on the material aspects of life, thus creating a huge "God void" which as a vacuum had to be filled by something and that something was man's intellect and ability to achieve. Thus, what we are observing in the world around us today is an all encompassing phenomena of creating a synthetic material world which is consequently supplanting the natural material world.

Synthetic World
So what's wrong with a synthetic material world? For starters, it is a denial of faith in a Creator and His ability to create that which is good, beneficial and enlightening for mankind. Consequently, because we are no longer relying upon a Creator, Provider and Helper; as a civilization, we find the need to create our own provisions and means by which to benefit our selves and our fellow man. So, instead of acknowledging our Creator, Father and God, we now ignore Him and continue on the path of creating our own world which mimics the natural world order but does not give life, sustenance and good health.

Delusional Thinking
Thus, we are experiencing the proliferation of so-called medicines which we accurately call 'antibiotics'. The term 'antibiotic' itself reveals the utter ignorance of mankind and our inability to extract ourselves from the consequences of calling good, evil and evil, good. Apparently this principle is so deeply ingrained into the darkened and deluded human psyche that even though we take them to promote life, we name them according to their true definition and purpose which is 'against life'. Nevertheless, we continue to flood the human and earthly terrain with these products in a state of delusional thinking and schizophrenic behavior.

Abiding Hope
Yet, in saying all of this, it is not too late to turn back to natural materialism as the means by which to obtain our life, our health and our sustenance. The earth is forgiving, revealing the nature of God and though the hour is late, it is not too late to turn back to the ways of the ancients, to the ways of East and to once again embrace nature, the good earth and all that grows upon it naturally as being for our benefit as God had ordained in the beginning.

Uncovering Oregano Oil

The oregano I am going to address in this article isn't that tasty traditional spice found in spaghetti sauce and pizza. One of the most potent and powerful of the essential oils, oregano oil has a long and ancient history of medicinal uses, yet unfortunately fell out of favor with us moderns as a consequence of the 20th century proliferation of pharmaceutical companies which were the brainchild of Rockefeller, an oil baron of the early 1900s. Rockefeller of the Standard Oil Company along with other monopoly barons such as the DuPonts, were visionaries who understood the concept of patents and were powerful enough to influence the governments of their day to legislate strict controls on natural products while protecting the interests of their patented synthetic products. As a consequence of their efforts over the past century, these corporate giants has enjoyed mind boggling success and continue to wield their mighty influence over virtually the entire planet to the extent that even our history, science and medical books reveal their bias and are written to support their corporate agenda while offering nothing but disparagingly veiled comments or silence in regard to the benefits of nature's medicinals. With that in mind, we can hopefully now begin to understand why oil of oregano, one of nature's wonders has remained to this day, a virtual secret to most people.

What Makes Oregano Oil So Special?
The primary ingredients of oregano oil are the phenols, Carvacrol (60-80%) and Thymol (5%) which provide the antiseptic and antioxidant components. They are also the terpenes, pinene and terinene which contribute to the antiseptic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anesthetic properties. Two long chain alcohols, linalool and bonreol also beef up the antiseptic and antiviral qualities. Lastly, the esters, linalyl acetate and granyl acetate act as powerful antifungal agents. It is the synergy of these components working together that allows for the healing powers of oregano oil to have their powerful effects on our bodies. Pharmaceutical companies in ignoring the power of this natural synergy do what they do with all the natural God given medicinals which is to extract the main ingredient and create a new product. Unfortunately their newly created and thus patentable products bear similarities to the naturally occurring medicinals but not enough to make them recognizable to our body systems which often times will treat them as pathogens or unrecognizable foreign invaders thus creating the typical multitude of detrimental side effects so common with pharmaceuticals.

Why Is Oregano Oil Considered Medicinal?
Oregano oil is considered medicinal because it has healing properties that are both aggressive and supportive in that this oil attacks pathogens within the body while at the same time feeding the body a multitude of necessary life promoting energized minerals and nutrients. PubMed lists almost two hundred studies that have been done on the beneficial properties of oregano oil. Although all these studies have taken place in the laboratory and not on human subjects they reveal the efficacious nature of this oil in dealing with pathogens as well as containing numerous essential minerals. Additionally, we have thousands of reports logged since antiquity extolling the virtuous healing powers of Oregano Oil.

All Plants And Herbs Have Medicinal Properties
Since antiquity man has noted the potent medicinal benefits of all plants and herbs that grow on the earth. Hippocrates, the famous ancient greek physician stated, "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food". Sadly, modern man has been brainwashed to believe that without man made pharmaceuticals, our civilization cannot survive. This absurd assumption is a bodacious fallacy when we consider that for thousands of years man has flourished on the earth without the intervention of synthetic or refined products. Our modern infatuation with attempting to improve upon nature is a consequence of our culture's rebellious bent which believes that we can improve upon the earthly provisions God has given us for blessings, health and overall well being. We are surrounded by a world full of naturally occurring remedies, foods, herbs and medicines which are packed with the energy to heal us and oregano oil is just one of thousands that we have been blessed with.

How Does Our Product Compare With Our Competition?

Dialogue With One Of Our Customers

Dear Sheri:

My name is Gary Greenfield and I own oreganoworld.com. You
recently purchased oregano oil from us and because I don't have the
opportunity to meet my customers face to face, I wanted to take time
to ask if you would be interested in sharing with me a little about
yourself and how you are using our oregano oil. I am writing each of
my customers one by one and this is not a mass mailing. I truly am
interested in my customers and how oregano oil is being used in their
households to improve health.

Hello Gary,

I just ordered your product on faith that it is as good as the Physician’s Strength Oil of Oregano brand. Is it?
Becky Roberts from Oregon is a dear friend of mine and her late husband introduced me to the benefits of this product many years ago. I’ve been purchasing Physician’s Strength for many years but it’s very costly and difficult to keep bulk for emergency preparedness on a single mom’s salary.
My son is highly allergic to bug bites of any kind and I put the oil on a cotton ball and under a band aid to keep the bite from developing into a bubble blister. Have you ever heard of this type of reaction from simple bug bites (ants, flees, etc.)?
The late Dr. Guy Roberts used to brush his teeth in Oregano oil. I did for a short time to alleviate tooth pain. When I have a cold or flu I rub it on my chest. When I bruise an area of my body I rub it on the wound and it heals rapidly.
I am stocking up for emergency preparedness (I have a large extended family) and the upcoming swine flu season. I am hoping that when it comes time to use it, that it will have the same healing effects as the Physician’s Strength brand.
Best Regards,
Sheri Warner

Dear Sheri:

Thank you so much for responding so quickly to my email. I did a little research on the product "Physician’s Strength Oil of Oregano brand" you refer to in your email to me and I was taken back by what they are charging for a bottle of oregano oil that doesn't even list the purity level of the oil. The lowest price I found for this oil was four times what we are charging and that is for a bottle of oregano oil that isn't even 100% pure! I can guarantee that our oil is 100% pure with nothing added to cut it just as it states on our website and it is of the finest quality available on the Internet. As a suggestion, I would recommend you try a sniff and taste test comparing our oil to our competitors and let me know how we rate.

Hello Gary,

I’m so thankful to be able to purchase your quality product at affordable prices! God Bless you for that!

Also, a couple years ago I dropped a VCR on my foot and thought I might have broken a bone or two (I didn’t thankfully). The area was turning a dark purple, almost black within minutes. My son ran to get the bottle of Oregano Oil and I immediately put it on the area (no broken skin). The bruising lessened by at least 50% immediately. I healed rapidly after that.

Isn’t that the coolest? J I love this product.

Do you have ideas for other uses that I don’t know of? I would greatly appreciate any input that you could provide. I just love corresponding with like-minded people. I live in the Los Angeles area and feel like a leaper with my knowledge of alternative medicine, the illuminati/NWO/etc. and love I have for our founding fathers.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sheri

Thanks Sheri, just as a FYI, I emailed one of the promoters of Physician's Strength Oregano Oil to inquire about what percentage of Oregano Oil was in their product and they emailed back stating that it was proprietory information although they did state that their oregano oil was mixed with olive oil. I am going to continue to dialogue with them until I get a more definitive answer.

Response from seller of Physician's Strength Oregano Oil:
" What the bottle says is "proprietary blend in extra virgin olive oil,
120 mg." That's all I have."

My response to the online company promoting Physician's Strength Oregano Oil:
Katie: Here is all I can ascertain from what the information you have given me thus far: 120 milligrams = 0.00423287543 ounces. Do you think that means there is .00423287543 ounces of oregano oil in this 1 ounce bottle and the rest is olive oil? If that is correct, then I would be paying $75.00 for what is essentially almost an ounce of olive oil. Why is it so difficult to ascertain what is in this little bottle of what is supposed to be mostly oregano oil? Doesn't this seem to be misleading advertising? What really is in this little bottle that cost so much money? Do you think the owners of this drug company really care about their customer's health or are they more concerned about how the health of their bank account? I wonder how many of these natural health companies really care about their customers health? Perhaps they are no different than the pharmecuetical companies? Sigh....Gary

Toothpaste & Allergy Medicine

I have used oregano oil since 2005, and have found that yours is the best I have used. It took me almost a year to find an oil that wasn't mixed with 80% olive oil. I have allergies, so I rub it on my feet every night and it has helped alot. Because of all of the toxins in the toothpaste, I brush my teeth with it. I feel there has never been a time in our history that good health has been more important. I wish everyone would try this product and be more proactive that reactive about their health. Thanks for carrying such a great product.

Yogurt / Oregano Oil Experiment

Everywhere on the web I have read that oregano oil acts as an “antibiotic” in that it indiscriminately kills all bacteria and consequently the gut must be repopulated with ‘good’ bacteria to replace what the oregano oil has killed. I have trouble accepting this premise in that first of all, if this were true, how could the oregano plant survive? All of life depends on bacteria to thrive and if the blood (oil) of the plant killed everything it contacted, the plant would die as well. To prove that oregano oil is a discriminating oil unlike man-made antibiotics, I injected high doses of oregano oil into a partial batch of yogurt cultures which I then used to make homemade yogurt. After twenty four hours, I tested both batches of yogurt for taste, consistency and texture and found both batches to be identical in all aspects. The oregano oil flavored yogurt was delicious with a savory, yet sour taste and a wonderful consistency which indicated the presence of live yogurt cultures. Being a layman, I did not use a microscope to confirm the presence of yogurt microbes but the yogurt had every indication of the presence of live yogurt cultures using my tastes buds, my sense of smell and my eyes. Amazingly, the oregano oil infused yogurt was preserved for one full month in my fridge before I finally enjoyed the last of it. Consequently, I would surmise that oregano oil has intelligence as an essential oil in that it is able to discern between good and bad, working holistically and synergistically to support the life systems it contacts with minerals, vitamins and antioxidents while destroying pathogens with it’s other unique chemical compounds and constituents.

An Industry Insider Responds:

“Generally, the more diluted a product is, the lower the retail price.

The 1:1 (contain 50% olive oil and 50% wild oregano oil) super strength products have very limited uses. It’s too concentrated to safely take orally, or to apply topically to the skin. Except for conditions like nail fungus, or perhaps treating a sore or wound, a 1:1 ratio needs to be diluted further, in more olive oil.

At the other end of the spectrum, a 1:5 ratio (17% wild oregano oil) may be better suited to people with sensitive skin – but for treating internal infections, there is very little oregano oil in each drop; therefore you’d need to take more of this product to get the same results as a 1:3 dilution (which is the industry standard).

It seems that most people have trouble converting ratios to percentages. Your clients may like knowing that 1:3 means there are 4 parts. So 1/4 or 25%.

Regarding dilutions, here are some popular brands:

Joy of the Mountains – 1:3 (25%)

N.A.H.S. Oreganol P73 – 1:1 (50%) Super Strength, and Regular Strength 1:3 (25%) ~ unless they’ve changed it recently

Hedd Wyn Essentials – 1:4 (20%)

Natural Factors – 1:4 (20%)

New Roots – 1:5 (17%)

St.Francis Oreganum Plus – 1:1 (50%) Super Strength, and Regular Strength 1:3 (25%)”

What Is A Standard Dilution For Oregano Oil?

A question from Jini: So, question for you then, I see you sell essential oil of oregano (undiluted). Do you happen to know what the standard dilution ratio is for commercial brands of oregano oil – that are cut with olive oil? i.e. in a one ounce bottle, how much essential oregano oil vs. olive oil is there?

Regarding your question, I can give you a rather general response because there are so many variations out there. I have researched my competition in the past but decided to answer your question by simply perusing the first page results from a google search on ‘oregano oil’. Here is what I found:

Two websites offered ‘pure 100% oregano oil’ with one price at about $17 and the other at $93 for 30ml of pure oregano oil. These oils came from different geographical regions and both websites were informative offering accurate data mixed with questionable and debatable information regarding their particular oregano oils.

The other websites listed on the first page of the google search offered diluted product with none of these vendors divulging the ratio of their carrier oil to the essential oil. I have found this to be more the norm than the exception and my simple web search confirmed my observations. Although, I have found vendors that divulge this information in a clear and understandable manner, unfortunately it isn’t typical. I have even written and called oregano oil vendors who didn’t provide clear information on their website. Here are some of those of those responses:

Vendor #1 – “The ration is 75% olive oil and 25% oregano oil”

Vendor #2 – “I don’t know how much olive oil is in the bottle”
Me: “Oh, well is there someone who can provide that information to me?”
Vendor: “No”
Me: Is the owner of the company available?”
Vendor: “You are talking to him”
Me: “Hmmm, so you mean to say you can’t answer my question”
Vendor: ” This product contains 100% pure oregano oil and the carvacrol level is over 80%”
Me: “Yes, but how much olive oil is mixed with the oregano oil?”
Vendor: “I don’t know”
Me: “Thank you for your time, good bye”

Vendor #3 – “Yes, we do mix olive oil with our oregano oil.” They didn’t offer the ratio and I didn’t pursue it further.

So, to answer your question; It just depends who you are purchasing product from. There is a lot of marketing hype out there and along with that hype comes false, misleading and questionable claims. In addition to having to wade through vendor claims, we also need to remember that oregano oil is an agriculture product and thus will vary in quality from year to year and from one geographical region to another. Additionally, the quality of the oil is going to be affected by the distillery and their principles and practices. To conclude, I would suggest you shop around for pure oregano oil and mix it yourself according to your preference after doing your own research.
